A stunning climbing location by Lake Garda: Placche Zebrate, Arco

Wonderful climbing spot only a few minutes drive from Arco

Lake Garda is well known for outdoor sports. It has something to offer to everyone. Arco, the town that lies on the northern tip of the lake, is world famous for its climbing areas and for the climbing competition held there. It has become so popular that the main crags are very crowded, and sometimes the rock is really polished.

If you are looking for a great place to climb near Arco you should check out the “Placche Zebrate”. Here you can find multipitch routes of various difficulties, ranging from easy (5a) to really hard (7c and over). So let’s talk a bit more about the Placche Zebrate.

Placche Zebrate in Dro, only a few kms from Arco

To reach the Placche Zebrate from Lake Garda you have to drive north. When you reach Dro you will see a fantastic wall on your left side. The highest peak is Monte Brentei (see the picture above) and it has become very popular for BASE jumping. You can park the car at the bar or in the public car park and walk towards the slab (15/20 minute walk). At the bar you can find a nice picture of the wall with the lines of many routes and the grades. It’s a great way to learn more about the available multipitch routes. Most routes are bolted, and the anchors are good. Finally, sometimes the distance between bolts can be quite big (often 4 or 5 meters).

Placche Zebrate translates into “Zebra Striped slabs”. This will become clear when you see the wall. The beautiful slabs are striped, with whiter and darker sections of limestone.
